BRIGITTE BARDOT TELLS FANS TO ‘CALM DOWN’ OVER HEALTH SCARE

Brigitte Bardot has asked well-wishers to “calm down” after she was taken to hospital for the second time in two months.

The French actress said that she was recovering and people should not be concerned about her health.

The 91-year-old was taken to hospital in southern France last month, following an admission for “minor” surgery in October. Unfounded reports stating she was close to death flooded social media.

On Sunday, Fondation Brigitte Bardot, an animal protection charity that she founded in 1986, released a statement urging fans not to worry and insisting she was on the mend.

It said: “In response to the spread of false information in recent days, Ms Brigitte Bardot would like to remind everyone that she is currently recovering, that she would appreciate it if people would respect her privacy, and invites everyone to calm down.

“Ms Bardot wishes to reassure those who are genuinely concerned about her. She sends them this message: ‘I send my love to you all.’”

In October, Bardot made reference to posts about her premature demise on X, writing: “I’m doing well. I don’t know which idiot started this ‘fake news’ story about my death tonight but rest assured that I am fine and have no intention of bowing out.”

She had a “minor” procedure at a private hospital last week that her office said “went particularly well”. She has since returned to her home in Saint Tropez.

Bardot found fame in the 1950s and 1960s for her films including And God Created Woman and Contempt. She retired from the stage and screen aged 39 and went on to become an animal rights campaigner.

She lives between La Madrague, her residence on the French Riviera, and La Garrigue, a country retreat which is home to her animals and a private chapel.

Last May, in an interview with BFMTV, she said she lived “like a farmer” surrounded by her sheep, pigs, dogs, cats, donkey and pony, and that she owned “neither a mobile phone nor a computer”.

In a feature-length documentary called Bardot, released last week, the actress told directors Elora Thevenet and Alain Berliner: “Fame is wonderful and unbearable.”

It was, she added: “A pleasant prison, but a prison nonetheless.”

Asked about her legacy, she said: “I don’t care if people remember me. I want them to remember the respect we owe to animals. The more I live, the more I fear humans. I am more animal than human.”
